Staff's Pick: Top Five Products with Weird-But-Effective Ingredients

Posted by Andy Shyr on

Some of the best ingredients in our skincare products are completely unexpected. Things such as Charcoal and Bee Venom that don't sound like they don't belong on our skin, can oftentimes become the key ingredients in some of our favorite products! Here's a list of five products with strange ingredients that our staff absolutely adores. 1. Used for years to absorb poison from the body, the first ingredient on this list is, of course, charcoal. This toxin-absorbing, oil-napping, dirt-grabbing ingredient can be found in plenty of different face masks and cleansers. With its ability to draw out impurities like a magnet, charcoal will clear and brighten your skin, especially if it's oily and/or acne-prone. Recommended item: Glamglow's Supermud Clearing Treatment utilizes charcoal to fight common skin concerns such as breakouts, discoloration, blackheads, whiteheads, razor bumps, and in-grown hairs. 2. Most of us don't even know what this ingredient looks like, but if we do know one thing about it, it's that it works wonders. Sea buckthorn is highly moisturizing, and uses many essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants to improve your skin. Heal burns and wounds, smooth fine lines, reduce wrinkles, and smooth out rough skin! Recommended item: Elemis' Cellutox Herbal Bath Synergy is the perfect relaxation product for your bath. With a unique spray of algae, sea buckthorn, sea fennel, juniper, and lemon, this bath synergy will cleanse, detox, and stimulate your body. 3. Rich in antioxidants that most commonly provide anti-inflammatory benefits for your skin, next up on our list is algae. This brightly colored ingredient can be found in our oceans, and are packed with many amino acids that will keep your skin healthy and hydrated. With many different types of algae, it's no surprise that they each have a different purpose, too! Red algae is the best for soothing and healing dry, damaged skin, and for reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation, whereas green algae helps with your skin's elasticity and collagen production. Recommended item: Revision Skincare's Hydrating Serum uses key ingredients such as honey, sea kelp extract, vitamin E, pomegranate, and algae in order to moisturize, reduce early aging signs, and alleviate skin tightness 4. Not just for a snack, seaweed is the fourth ingredient on our list. Containing magnesium, manganese, calcium, iodine, copper, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A through E, seaweed will help protect your complexion from free radical damage, prevent early signs of aging, stimulate collagen production, and plump up your skin! Recommended item: Cellex-C's Sea Silk Oil-Free Moisturizer is a sea botanical medley with seaweed as one of its key ingredients. This moisturizer will leave immediate and long-lasting hydration and strengthen your skin's elasticity and collagen production. 5. When we think of this next ingredient, we think of a lot of things - chopsticks, pandas, food, etc. One thing we don't realize, though, is that bamboo is also an amazing ingredient for your skincare products. With lots of antioxidants and healing properties, bamboo will protect your skin from free radicals that can cause premature aging, help heal infections quicker, moisturize your skin, and reduce melanin production to fade dark spots and reduce hyperpigmentation. Recommended item: Eminence's Bamboo Firming Fluid uses bamboo and coconut oil to strengthen skin, balance skin pH, delay visible signs of aging, fight free radicals, and lift, tighten, and firm your skin.
